Completion of a New Research Building at Yokohama Works
On September 24th, a completion ceremony was held for the PRISM Lab, a new research building at Yokohama Works. The ceremony featured a Shinto ritual by a priest from the Tsurugaoka Hachimangu shrine, a tour of the new facility, the presentation of a letter of appreciation to the construction company, and a ribbon-cutting ceremony.
PRISM Lab is a research facility equipped with state-of-the-art equipment for experiments and ultra-high-precision analytical instruments. It was established to strengthen the research and development capabilities of the company’s Infocommunications Business Unit. Due to the ongoing adoption of generative AI, this is an area where business growth is expected to continue, for example in products related to data centers.
The name PRISM Lab is derived from the words "PR" (Precision), "I" (Innovation), and "SM" (Sumitomo). It stands for a space that’s intended to foster innovation in precision optical technologies. The name was also inspired by the prism itself, a multifaceted optical element that guides light. Furthermore, the name expresses our vision for the facility to serve as a hub for optical technology research, where diverse ideas will converge to spark new synergies and create value.
With the completion of PRISM Lab, we aim to bolster the Infocommunications Business Unit’s R&D capabilities from fundamental research to practical application. Our expectation for this organizational enhancement is that it will contribute to the advancement of optical communication technologies that underpin future social infrastructure, while also driving the business unit’s further growth.
