Meeting with Scottish Cabinet Secretary Neil Gray
On June 25th, I met with Neil Gray, Scotland’s Cabinet Secretary for Health and Social Care. It was our first meeting since April 2023. On this occasion Mr. Gray was in Japan to see the World Expo, and he kindly took some time to visit Sumitomo Electric headquarters. Each member of our party wore a tartan necktie, as we did on Mr. Gray’s previous visit. We were happy to see him again and warmly welcomed him to start the meeting.
As Scotland expands the use of renewable energy in their aim to become a “net zero” economy, the country is putting significant effort into developing capabilities for offshore wind power generation. Sumitomo Electric is supporting this effort by building a new factory for the kinds of power cables that are essential to harnessing offshore wind power. The new factory is currently being constructed at the Port of Nigg in the Scottish Highlands, with the start of operation being targeted for September 2026. In the meeting with Mr. Gray, we provided him with an overview of the factory project and reported on the progress of construction. We also expressed our gratitude for the great cooperation we have received thus far and reaffirmed our intention to continue strengthening ties in the future.
At Sumitomo Electric, we are developing business activities to realize our long-term vision of "Living in Safety and Comfort on Our Green Planet." In line with this vision, we look forward to building upon our good relationship with the Scottish Government, which shares our aspirations, and working together to create a green society.
