Track & Field Team’s Annual Gathering
On March 27th, we held the Sumitomo Electric track and field team’s annual gathering, which brought together not only the athletes but also the coaches, staff, and company executives involved with our team. This event is always a refreshing experience because it’s the only time of year that we get to see everyone at once, due to their busy schedules with training and competitions. After welcoming attendees with a toast to their daily efforts, I got to hear about the team’s results in major competitions held in fiscal year 2024 and the personal bests which were recorded during this time. Athletes who retired from competition last year gave a few words, new members of the team shared their aspirations, and the team that placed highly at the New Year’s Ekiden (long-distance relay race) in January were presented with a special President’s Award in honor of their performance.
The goal of the Sumitomo Electric track and field team is to develop athletes who can compete on the world stage. Currently, the team has 31 members: 18 long-distance runners, 10 sprinters, and three individuals who specialize in the heptathlon/decathlon, long jump and hammer throw, respectively.
With the World Athletics Championships to be held in Tokyo later this year, I hope that many members of our team will qualify for the tournament and do well. My wish for all of our athletes in the days ahead is to stay healthy, train well, and – with the support of the entire staff – continue to aim for new heights.
