Visit from The Duke of Edinburgh
On September 22nd, we had the great honor of welcoming His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh to Osaka Works during his official visit to Japan.
The Sumitomo Electric Group has been actively developing the ability to support infrastructure projects in the United Kingdom, as part of an overall effort to grow our power cable business in Europe in support of the region’s renewable energy initiatives. Specifically in the UK, we are currently constructing a state-of-the-art submarine power cable factory at Port of Nigg in Scotland.
On the day of The Duke’s visit to Osaka Works, Chairman Matsumoto gave an overview of our company's history and business activities, and Senior Executive Officer Shibata provided an explanation of the new factory in Scotland. This was followed by a tour of the power cable factory, where The Duke was able to see the advanced technology that we use to manufacture high-voltage DC power cables. He also spoke with our young engineers and the Scottish engineers who are now in Japan for extended training. The sight of him listening attentively and asking questions during this interaction left a deep impression on me.
At the conclusion of the tour, in a moment I will treasure, we had the honor of posing for a commemorative photograph with His Royal Highness.
We are truly grateful that The Duke chose to visit our company on the occasion of his official visit to Japan, which was a trip to strengthen the bonds of friendship and cooperation between the two countries. The Sumitomo Electric Group will continue to contribute to the UK's net zero strategy and the development of local business, while we also work to strengthen the relationship between the UK and Japan.
