On March 16th, I went to see the Expo Ekiden 2025, a long-distance relay race that was held to promote Expo 2025 Osaka Kansai Japan, which will be starting very soon.

The Expo Ekiden 2025 was contested over a 54.5 km route in Osaka from the Expo ’70 Commemorative Park to Yumeshima, the site of Expo 2025. The race was unique not only for being held in a city with more than one expo to its name, but also because this was the first time in ekiden history for university teams and corporate teams to compete against each other. As a sponsor of the event, Sumitomo Electric entered our team, which was one of the top finishers at this year’s New Year Ekiden, into the race.

On this particular day, the team from Toyota Motor Corporation dominated the field and led the race at every leg from start to finish. Fujitsu also demonstrated the strength of corporate teams by coming in second place. As for the university teams, they made it a thrilling competition thanks to third-place Kokugakuin University and several other teams that finished in the top ten. The Sumitomo Electric team, coming into this event on the heels of another race, may not have placed as highly as we’d hoped, but I believe we contributed to the day’s excitement through both our runners’ efforts and the cheers of myself and around 120 fellow employees who came to watch.

The Expo Ekiden 2025 was a unique event that certainly helped bring attention to the upcoming Osaka Expo. I’d like to thank all the athletes who participated in the race and all the people who worked diligently to make this event a success.
