Visit to Amprion GmbH in Germany
As part of my recent trip to Germany, on July 1 we paid a courtesy visit to Amprion, one of the country’s major operators of electricity transmission systems. We had the privilege of meeting with Chief Executive Officer Dr. Christoph Müller, Chief Technology Officer Dr. Hendrik Neumann, and other members of their executive leadership team.
To promote the adoption of renewable energy in Germany, Amprion is developing an extra-high-voltage grid that will span approximately 9,300 kilometers from the North Sea to the Alps. In May, Sumitomo Electric secured a contract for the DC35 project. This is our third project for Amprion in their overall plan, following our contracts with them for the A-Nord and V49 projects.
During the visit, we expressed our appreciation for the new contract and reiterated our commitment to successfully complete all three projects. We also outlined our plans to strengthen local manufacturing and EPC (engineering, procurement, and construction) capabilities, specifically by establishing a new EPC entity named Sumitomo Electric Power Cable Europe (SEP-E) and by expanding the production capacity of Südkabel, our local cable manufacturing subsidiary. Amprion executives stated that they look forward to an even stronger partnership between our two companies.
Sumitomo Electric will continue to deepen our collaboration with partners in Europe’s power industry, and thereby contribute to the promotion of renewable energy across the continent and the enhancement of infrastructure needed to realize a decarbonized society.
