R&D Presentations and Safety Ceremony at Yokohama Works
On December 17th, I was at Yokohama Works to attend a research & development meeting that was jointly organized by the various R&D departments at this location. These R&D meetings are held every year at each of our primary manufacturing sites: Osaka Works, Itami Works, and Yokohama Works. This most recent one I attended was focused on developments in Sumitomo Electric’s infocommunications business.
The day started with a morning poster session, where I was able to speak with research staff to gain a deeper understanding of their presentations. In the afternoon, I listened to a series of oral presentations that focused on cutting-edge research related to the growing speed and volume of infocommunications and to reducing power consumption.
Just as the infocommunications field is expected to grow due to strong demand in the data center market, I felt this energy in the liveliness of the day’s presentations.
Apart from the R&D presentations, on the same day I participated in a ceremony to pray for everyone’s safety during the construction of a new research building that will be built at Yokohama Works. The ceremony was held under clear skies and attended by about 70 people involved in this project from inside and outside the company. The head priest of Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine led a Shinto ritual for the ceremony.
The new research building will serve as the base for our company’s development of cutting-edge infocommunications products. This includes optical connectors and optical interconnects, products that will be designed to handle faster data transmission and lower power consumption at the many data centers being built around the world in response to advances in generative artificial intelligence and digital transformation (DX). The new research building is scheduled to open in the summer of 2026.
At the R&D meeting, our researchers presented on a variety of themes related to the future of infocommunications. Their efforts will be accelerated in the new research building as we strive to provide products to this field with the world’s highest quality and performance.
