Visit to Mexico Group Companies
From September 7 to 9, I was in Aguascalientes, Mexico, and visited three Sumitomo Electric Group companies located there.
This was my first visit in two years to K&S Mexicana, a company that manufactures automotive wiring harnesses. The day started with a progress report on kaizen initiatives they have undertaken since my previous visit. I then observed their production lines and, at six different stations, spoke directly with local staff about their on-site efforts.
The next visit was to Sumitomo Electric Sintered Components Mexico (SEMX), a manufacturer of sintered powder metal parts. The SEMX staff walked me through their production process from compacting to sintering to machining. They also provided briefings on safety measures and specific kaizen projects. I was impressed by how their employees are actively engaged in identifying areas of improvement and continuously working to minimize defects.
The third company, Judd Wire Mexico (JMEX), is a production base for high-performance, heat-resistant electronic wire. They have also launched an assembly line for optical interconnect products to meet the growing demand from data center customers. At JMEX, the expatriate staff and local team members are working closely together to build a solid foundation for quality manufacturing.
From this visit to Mexico, it became clear to me that each company’s employees are proactively driving improvements to strengthen the foundations of their business. In addition, having had the opportunity to speak with expatriate staff after hours, I heard their candid perspectives on local initiatives and business challenges.
I look forward to seeing each company continue to leverage their unique strengths, contribute to our further growth in North America, and strengthen the Sumitomo Electric Group’s competitiveness in the region.
