Track & Field Team’s End-of-Season Gathering
On March 26th, we held a gathering to mark the end of the Sumitomo Electric track and field team’s 2025 season. All of the team’s athletes, coaches, staff, and related executives were invited. I look forward to this event every year because it’s one of the few times I can speak in depth with so many of the team members. This year’s gathering was especially lively as almost everyone was able to attend, unlike last year when some of the athletes couldn’t be there due to competitions and other commitments.
As is our tradition, we started the gathering with a toast and words of appreciation for everyone’s diligent efforts. This was followed by reports on the team’s results at major competitions during the 2025 season and recognition for those who had set personal records. We also heard from athletes who are retiring from the team, new athletes who have just joined, and the team’s head coach about their aspirations. The President’s Award, which is presented annually to athletes who achieve notable results, was given this year to sprinter Yuki Koike, who contributed to the national team’s 6th place finish in the 4 x 100m relay at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo.
It is the goal of the Sumitomo Electric track and field team to develop athletes who can compete on the world stage. The team currently has 28 members: 16 long-distance runners, nine sprinters, a heptathlete/decathlete, a hammer thrower, and a long jumper.
This year, the Asian Games will be held in Aichi Prefecture. Our head coach has stated that he wants to send as many of our team’s athletes to represent Japan as possible. My wish for all the athletes and staff is to take utmost care to avoid injuries as they aim for new heights this coming season. I hope to hear more good news about their success in various competitions.
