Sumitomo Electric Develops 5-Meter Range Road-Crossing Detection Sensor

Sumitomo Electric Industries, Ltd. has successfully developed a sensor that can accurately detect and identify pedestrians and bicyclists approaching the road. By using its proprietary AI image processing technology, the sensor’s detection range towards a pedestrian extends to five meters behind.

The high proportion of pedestrians and bicyclists among the number of traffic accident fatalities poses a serious issue worldwide. In recent years, due to the rise of e-bikes and other vehicles, ensuring the safety of these road users has become a key challenge for reducing traffic accidents.

In order to address this challenge, Sumitomo Electric will launch the NEXUSEYE™* in October 2024. This millimeter-wave sensor utilizes a radar system to accurately detect a wide frontal area, even under challenging weather conditions and during nighttime.

This sensor, which combines NEXUSEYE™ technology with a nadir-facing camera and the Company’s unique AI image processing technology to detect and identify road-crossers, often in the blind spots of drivers and general sensors, from the moment they approach the roadway, thus assisting safe road crossing.

Features of the crosser detection sensor

1. Detects pedestrians approaching a road:The sensor uses a nadir-facing camera to cover blind spots directly below, which is a limitation of millimeter-wave radar, and detects pedestrians crossing from directly below the sensor to approximately five meters behind.

2. Identifies crossers:Using the AI image processing technology for camera images, the sensor identifies white cane users, pedestrians, bicyclists, wheelchair users, etc. with an accuracy of 95% or higher.

* NEXUSEYE™  is a wide-range, high-precision millimeter-wave sensor. It can detect pedestrians 60 meters away with almost 100% accuracy, even in the rain at night. NEXUSEYE and the NEXUSEYE logo are trademarks of Sumitomo Electric Industries, Ltd.

1.The crosser detection sensor detects and identifies a crosser approaching from the sidewalk.

2. The crosser detection sensor notifies the automobile driver of the crosser via signals, signs, LEDs, and other communication measures, using the information detected and identified.

Sumitomo Electric will showcase this new technology at the 30th ITS World Congress 2024 Dubai, to be held casing d in Dubai, UAE, from Monday, September 16 to Friday, September 20, 2024. The Company looks forward to seeing you at the booth.
