SUMITOMO ELECTRIC U.K. POWER CABLES marks Key Milestone in Construction at the Port of Nigg

Sumitomo Electric U.K. Power Cables Ltd. (SEUK-CL), the Scotland-based subsidiary of Sumitomo Electric Industries, Ltd., is pleased to announce that the arrival of the first batch of structural steel at the site marks a significant step forward in the development of Sumitomo Electric’s state of the art Submarine Power Cable manufacturing facility.

SEUK-CL is making significant strides in the construction of its state-of-the-art submarine power cable manufacturing facility in Nigg, Northeast Scotland.
Since breaking ground in May 2024, groundwork, piling, and foundation work for the main building have been progressing, marking an important step toward the realization of this significant infrastructure.
A key milestone was recently achieved with the arrival of the first batch of structural steel at the site. This steel, supplied by B.H.C. Limited (BHC), a well-respected Scottish company, will form the backbone of the facility’s factory and warehouse structure. By partnering with a local Scottish supplier, SEUK-CL not only ensuring high-quality materials and reliable delivery but also actively contributing to the growth of Scotland’s economy through  supporting local industries. SEUK-CL looks forward to the continued delivery of additional shipments as construction progresses.

Yasuyuki Shibata, Senior Executive Officer of Sumitomo Electric Industries, Ltd., said:
I am delighted to reach this momentous milestone through collaboration with all our stakeholders, which is key to making this ambitious project a success. We deeply appreciate the support of local partners, authorities, and communities as we work together to bring this cutting-edge facility to life. Stay tuned for more milestones as we continue to invest in Scotland and the UK’s sustainable energy future.

Brian Hewitt, the Managing Director of BHC, said:
We are very pleased to have started work for our newest customer Europlan on behalf of their client SUMITOMO ELECTRIC U.K. POWER CABLES LTD. on the new subsea cable factory at Port of Nigg. Our design team, based in Carnwath, has successfully completed an efficient design, enabling us to meet our planned site start dates. The steelwork for this site is dedicated to line 8 in our factory which fabricated 262 tons for this project last week.

Donnchadh Campbell, Managing Director of Europlan (SEUK-CL’s principal contractor), said:
With this milestone achieved through all the hard work by Europlan’s design team, the on-site project management team and our construction partners of which BHC is a big part, we have shown our commitment to local Scottish businesses as well as to our client SEUK-CL on building this project safely, on time and in budget. We look forward to achieving more milestones with SEUK-CL and BHC and opening the factory on schedule by mid-2026.
