In recent years, phenomena attributed to global warming have been occurring frequently around the world. These events are not only disrupting daily life but are also causing severe damage in many areas. There is growing concern that these impacts will continue to intensify. Thinking about our children and future generations, I strongly feel that we cannot afford to delay addressing these issues.

In our "Sumitomo Electric Group 2030 VISION," one of our primary management goals is to realize a green society. The key to reaching this goal lies in the electrification of vehicles, which account for about 20% of CO2 emissions, and the effective utilization of renewable energy such as solar power. Our Group provides a wide range of products and services to both the automotive (mobility) and the power (energy) industries. By leveraging our comprehensive strengths, we aim to integrate innovative technologies across these two sectors and create new value to address global challenges.

Sumitomo Electric Group's EMS Business and Its Mission in a Changing Era

At Sumitomo Electric Group, we aim to bridge the mobility and the energy sectors using our unique energy management system (EMS). In the mobility sector, the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs), which produce zero CO2 emissions, is accelerating to reduce environmental impact. Through our telematics technology and products, we support the safe and comfortable use of EVs. Meanwhile, in the energy sector, the increased use of renewable energy sources like solar and wind power is being promoted. However, technology is needed to effectively manage fluctuations in power generation caused by weather conditions to ensure a stable energy supply.

In our EMS business, we are exploring a new business model that leverages our EV technology and energy management expertise to aggregate EV batteries and use them as a balancing resource within the power grid. At the household level, our newly developed vehicle-to-home (V2H) charger allows EVs to charge during peak renewable energy production, helping to balance supply and demand while maximizing energy efficiency. Through technological innovation, the Sumitomo Electric Group is committed to connecting mobility and energy, redefining the role of automobiles and the future of energy supply, and accelerating the realization of a green and sustainable society.

Sumitomo Electric Group's EMS Business Overview

Collaborating with Customers

Our EMS business has just transitioned from the demonstration phase to practical services, and we are currently developing strategies for its future growth. There is no doubt that this is an essential system for achieving social objectives, such as carbon neutrality and maximizing energy efficiency.

As a key player supporting the foundation of society, it is crucial for us to collaborate with customers, including governments, local authorities, power companies, and automotive manufacturers, to develop advanced systems. There are times when I take the lead on the front lines and engage directly with our customers. In these discussions, I strongly feel that our customers share the same sense of mission in EMS development as we do. This shared commitment allows us to tackle difficult challenges together, exchanging ideas and engaging in thorough discussions to find the best solutions. This process can sometimes become a serious, uncompromising effort, but it is this resolution that enables us to deliver truly valuable products and services.

Solving Global Challenges Begins with Taking the First Step

As a wireless communication engineer, I have long been involved in developing new technologies and products in the field of infocommunications. Since taking responsibility for the EMS business in 2022, I have had the privilege of learning from many skilled engineers about the depth of their splendid technologies and ideas. Having always found pleasure and purpose in taking on new challenges and contributing to society, I am excited to once again have the opportunity to dedicate myself to a meaningful endeavor.

My primary role is to unite a team with diverse talents and maximize its potential. To achieve this, I focus on selecting the right leaders, clearly communicating the importance of each project, and creating a dynamic, supportive work environment. While we may not always achieve the expected results, I believe that taking the first step is crucial as it leads to growth and success. Seeing the products and services we have developed in use and benefiting many people makes all the effort worthwhile. I hope the younger engineers also have the chance to experience this satisfaction.

In new business ventures, we often face unexpected challenges, but I am confident that by working as a united team and aligning our goals with our customers, we can continue to make meaningful contributions to both our customers and society. Moving forward, I will embrace the philosophy of "Goho Yoshi” (Five-Way Win), which emphasizes mutual benefit for all stakeholders including employees, customers, suppliers, regional communities, and shareholders. This principle will guide our efforts in addressing social issues through the continued development of the EMS business.
