Sumitomo Electric Brings Innovative DX to Industrial Sites with Private 5G—Showcasing Our Private 5G Network and 5G Terminals at COMNEXT 2025 in Collaboration with SoftBank—

Sumitomo Electric Industries, Ltd. will exhibit private 5G solutions jointly with SoftBank Corp. (Headquarters: Minato-ku, Tokyo; President & CEO: Junichi Miyakawa, hereinafter, "SoftBank") at COMNEXT 2025, Japan's largest exhibition of next-generation communication technologies, to be held at Tokyo Big Sight from July 30 (Wednesday) to August 1 (Friday), 2025.

COMNEXT is Japan's largest exhibition of next-generation communication technologies, bringing together communication service providers and equipment manufacturers. In 2024, the event attracted 13,000 attendees. At the joint booth with SoftBank, we will showcase SoftBank's private 5G solution for corporate customers, as well as our private 5G Terminals compatible with private 5G, which we began mass production of in June 2025, and our AI-equipped  5G Terminals that are currently under development.

Private 5G is a dedicated 5G network built individually for each company and municipality, utilizing SoftBank's frequency bands. Unlike traditional mobile communication networks, which are used by the general public and have limitations on bandwidth and number of connections, private 5G employs dedicated frequency bands to enable high-speed, low-latency communication. In deployed locations, data from sensors and cameras is aggregated on our 5G Terminals and transmitted at high speeds over the Private 5G network. By analyzing the data in the cloud or on MEC*, the digital transformation (DX) of factory IoT and transportation networks is achieved.

At this exhibition, we will demonstrate a 5G Terminal (Model Number IGW5111) that supports 5G millimeter waves for high-capacity communication and is dustproof and waterproof. It also features edge processing capabilities via the Docker platform. Additionally, we will showcase a demonstration of the latest model currently under development that is equipped with an AI platform and enables AI processing on the Terminal.

In a demonstration using the IGW5111, images of a forklift and workers in the vicinity will be transmitted via private 5G, and the MEC-based AI will monitor the movement and position of both to predict potential hazards. In such cases, the edge processing of the 5G Terminal will activate an LED lamp connected to the Digital Output (DO) Terminal to alert users with low latency.

Additionally, in a demonstration using AI-equipped 5G Terminals, our proprietary AI-driven image compression processing reduces the data volume of high-resolution video by up to 90% compared to conventional methods. This enables stable video transmission.

We look forward to seeing you at our booth.
