The Duke of Edinburgh Visits Osaka Works for a Power Cable Factory Tour
On September 22nd, His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh visited the Osaka Works of Sumitomo Electric Industries, Ltd.
As part of the company’s plan to expand its power cable business in Europe, Sumitomo Electric announced the establishment of a subsidiary in the Scottish Highlands in April 2023. Currently, construction of the subsidiary’s new factory at Port of Nigg is underway. The principal plant of the new factory is located at Sumitomo Electric Industries’ Osaka Works, which hosted a tour for The Duke of Edinburgh on September 22nd.
His Royal Highness was briefed by Masayoshi Matsumoto, Chairman and CEO of Sumitomo Electric Industries, on the company’s history and business operations. In addition, Senior Executive Officer Yasuyuki Shibata provided an update on the new factory in Scotland. After the briefing, The Duke toured the power cable factory to observe the manufacturing process and pre-shipment testing process. The Duke also spoke with young engineers at the company who are involved in international projects and with engineers from Scotland who are currently undergoing long-term training at Osaka Works. In these interactions, The Duke expressed a deep interest in international talent development and Japan/UK technical cooperation.

By leveraging the high quality of its power cables and the advanced technological capabilities it has developed over many years, Sumitomo Electric is committed to supporting the United Kingdom and Scotland’s net zero initiatives and contributing to the growth of local supply chains.
