Sumitomo Electric’s Makoto Ogasawara Receives the "Best Paper Award" at the International Conference OECC/PSC2025 —Challenges in the New Applications of Photonic-crystal surface-emitting lasers—
Makoto Ogasawara of Optical Devices Department, Transmission Devices Laboratory, Sumitomo Electric Industries, Ltd., was honored* with the "Best Paper Award" at the 30th OptoElectronics and Communications Conference/International Conference on Photonics in Switching and Computing 2025 (OECC/PSC2025), one of the most important international conferences in the Asia-Pacific region in the fields of optoelectronics, optical fiber transmission, and photonic network systems. The award ceremony was held on July 2 at the Sapporo Grand Hotel in Sapporo City, Hokkaido, and Ogasawara was presented with the award certificate.

The "Best Paper Award" is conferred to research papers accepted at OECC/PSC2025 that demonstrate particularly outstanding achievements. This award recognizes the research presentation titled "High-Power Continuous Operation of a 1.3 μm-band InP-based Photonic Crystal Laser with an In-Plane Hetero structure," conducted in collaboration with Kyoto University. This work was acknowledged for its efforts toward the application of photonic-crystal surface-emitting lasers (PCSELs) which are gaining attention as a new type of laser, in optical communication.
Comment from Makoto Ogasawara, Optical Devices Department, Transmission Devices Laboratory, Sumitomo Electric
PCSELs are expected to have a wide range of applications, including data center communications, free-space communications, and sensing. We will continue to improve the characteristics of PCSELs and advance research aimed at their practical implementation in society.
