Development and Sales of Coated Carbide Grades for Stainless Steel Turning AC6135M/AC6145M and EH type Chipbreaker

Sumitomo Electric Industries, Ltd. (head office: Chuo-ku, Osaka, President: Osamu Inoue, hereafter "our company") has developed and launched the new AC6135M/AC6145M grades, ideal for interrupted machining of stainless steel and mill-scale work, as well as the EH type chipbreaker, for sale as of July 2024.

Due to its excellent corrosion resistance and thermal resistance, stainless steel is widely used as the preferred material in pipelines for water, petroleum, and natural gas, and for pipes, valves and flanges for semiconductor and food production machinery, and the demand for it is increasing year by year.

However, they have characteristics such as low thermal conductivity and susceptibility to work hardening. Cutting tools are prone to short tool life and instability due to various types of damages such as wear, adhesion and sudden fractures, so the performance level required of tools is becoming increasing higher.

In order to respond to these needs, our company has developed the new AC6135M/AC6145M grades, ideal for interrupted machining of stainless steel and mill-scale work, as well as the EH type chipbreaker. These products will make great contributions to increased productivity and reduced machining costs, through providing absolute stability in stainless steel turning.

1. Features
AC6135M/AC6145M utilises our proprietary PVD* coating technology (Absotech™), to achieve both high wear resistance and chipping resistance.
Achieving excellent stability and longer tool life with AC6135M, in light-interrupted turning, and AC6145M, which utilises a high-toughness cemented carbide, for interrupted turning of stainless steel.
The EH type chipbreaker has a strong double-rake shape and low-resistance spherical protrusions to suppress sudden fractures due to impacts while also suppressing trouble caused by increased resistance such as adhesion and work hardening, to achieve outstanding stability, especially in interrupted turning.
