We are capable of providing comprehensive services from production to installation of High Voltage Cable, contributing to power transmission infrastructure development in Japan and throughout the world. Likewise in the field of submarine cables, since having installed the world's longest submarine cable at that time of 21km in 1922, we have to date manufactured and installed around 8,000km* of submarine cables.

High Voltage XLPE Cable is now dominant in new transmission lines for both land and submarine applications. Utilizing the broad base in technological and product development knowhow accumulated from the first pioneering steps in this field way back in the 1960's, we have been leading extra High Voltage XLPE Cable development including DC application. In 2000, we commissioned the world's first long distance AC High Voltage XLPE Cable system (500kV) and in 2019 we successfully put into commercial operation the world's first DC High Voltage XLPE Cable system (400kV) in UK-Belgium Link (NEMO Linke Project).
We provide full support towards its customers on "Full Turn Key" basis by providing high technology products, its related accessories and facilities from design, development and manufacturing right through to installation planning and implementation. We have consistently provided prime quality and efficient engineering in diversified arenas such as underground, submarine and bridge crossings.

History
The history of Sumitomo Electric dates back more than 120 years. Back then, Japan was still heavily dependent on imports for cables and almost all other expensive items. To solve the country’s extremely severe situation, and contribute to realizing a rich, dream-inspiring future, we launched an electric wire business in 1897. Afterwards, we succeeded in the first domestic production of high-voltage underground cables and the production and installation of the world's longest submarine cables. We have thus played an important role in supporting the development of Japanese industries.
This long history has been underpinned by the Sumitomo Spirit, which has been passed down from generation to generation for more than 400 years. Sumitomo’s history, the origin of Sumitomo Electric, began with copper refining business. Since then, for more than 400 years, we have always strived to conduct business in harmony with society. Placing our basis on the Sumitomo Spirit, we will contribute to the development of Japan and the rest of the world, with our belief in the great potential of innovation.
Submarine Cable
Submarine cable is a vital component of offshore renewable energy (RE) projects such as wind farms. While submarine cables are sometimes installed in harsh environments that include currents, water pressure, high waves, or unforeseeable obstacles on sea beds. The installation of submarine cables requires much sophisticated technologies.
As one of the pioneers of the global submarine cable business, we Sumitomo Electric determines to deliver the world the comprehensive solution of design, production, installation and project management, for precisely and timely execution of complex installation projects.

525kV DC Underground Cable for Korridor A-Nord in Germany
Sumitomo Electric has been awarded 525kV DC XLPE underground cable systems for the Korridor A-Nord project by Amprion GmbH, one of Germany’s transmission system operators. Under the contract, we are responsible for the design, manufacturing, logistics, installation, jointing, commissioning and maintenance of the approximately 300km long cable route. The route connects the converter stations in Petkum, located at Emden, and Osterath, near Düsseldorf. Through the 2GW transmission system, clean energy generated by offshore wind farms in northwestern Germany flows south—powering the nation’s future. This milestone marks a significant advancement in one of the country’s most vital energy infrastructure developments. The project will be implemented as part of a long-term strategic collaboration between the two companies.
